THE GEOMETRIC SERIES
The Geometric Series explores the simple shapes found across sports architecture, expressing their form and meaning in a bold, abstract style. This growing series brings athletics and art together, blending two of my lifelong passions. In addition to portraying these shapes and crisp linework, these collections carry deep meaning about finding your own path and going after your goals.
To represent swimming, I chose the t-shape found at the bottom of the pool. This T serves as a visual for swimmers to know when the lap is ending, and the wall is near. The T continues as a line down the lane to keep swimmers on their path. As a former competitive swimmer, I spent countless hours staring at this line, following it and allowing it to guide me.
Despite being creative from a young age, I experimented with lots of other career paths, ultimately taking time away from creating. Although my path was not a straight line like the one in a pool, I was able to follow it and find my way back to art. I wanted to highlight this line from swimming to encourage others to find theirs.
To represent track and running, I focused on the individual lanes of a track. Similar to swimming, this lane keeps runners on their path, guiding them through their race. In these pieces, each stripe symbolizes a lane, or a path.
I wanted to also bring in a representation of detours we may take in the race of life, bringing in the split in each of the stripes. While there may be breaks in each of the stripes, or paths, they all restart. I wanted this to serve as a reminder that restarting or shifting along the way is a part of the process, and nothing to be afraid of.
Lastly, I wanted to celebrate the uniqueness of us all. I’ve had quite a unique career journey, which is not always something I celebrated. Painting one of the stripes differently than the rest adds another layer to the larger pieces, making them feel more complete, just as our own differences do.
To represent surfing, I focused on the anatomy and structure of a wave. As a lover of water, I’ve always been intrigued by surfing, especially surfers finding their way into the barrel of a wave. The more I studied the different parts of waves, the more I knew I needed to focus on the barrel. To simplify it into my geometric terms, I landed on a circle. But, of course there is never just one wave, so my design became a series of circles, like a series of waves crashing on the shore.
I also loved the slow, smoothness of waves further away from shore and felt like the circles lined up helped illustrate this motion as well. As if you were to draw a line on top of the circles following the curves.
Just as I did for track, I wanted to make one of the circles a different color than the rest. Celebrating the uniqueness of waves, surfers, boards, and, really, all of us.
